The Desert Experience

The Holy Spirit led Loved One into a really tough situation to be tempted by the devil. Loved One felt abandoned for what seemed like an eternity to them, and was desperate for help.

The devil came to Loved One saying, “If you are a child of God, tell these rocks to become your favorite food so you can eat! What do you want to eat? Pizza? Tacos? Filet Mignon? Maine Lobster?“

Loved One remembered that the Bible says: ’A person doesn’t live only by eating food. They also need experiences with God.’ “ (Deuteronomy 8:3)

Having failed, the devil smiled and had another idea. He wanted to use scripture to fool Loved One. Putting Loved One on the top of a cliff, he said to them, “If you are a child of God, Loved One, then jump off this cliff! Remember that the Bible also says: ’He has put his angels in charge of you. They will catch you in their hands so that you will not hit your foot on a rock.’ “ (Psalm 91:11) He has a sly smile on his face that he just couldn’t hide.

With God’s help, Loved One remembered that the Bible also says: ’Do not test the Lord your God.’ “(Deuteronomy 6:16)

Being persistent, the devil took Loved One to the top of a very, very high mountain so that they could see the whole world. He showed them everything enjoyable that this life has to offer. After a while, the devil said, “If you’ll bow down and worship me, Loved One, I will give you everything and anything you want.“

With God’s help Loved One said to the devil in a strong voice, “Get lost Satan! The Bible says: ’ Loved One must worship the Lord God and serve only Him.’ “(Deuteronomy 13:4)

So the devil left Loved One. Angels came and took care of Loved One, ending the desert experience.

Matthew 4:1-11, NAPSV
